E-mail Print PDF

One of the five AMESD Regional Implementation Centres (RICs), Commission Internationale du bassin Congo – Oubangui – Sangha (CICOS), has released AMESD water level alert bulletin that indicates the daily prediction of water levels on the Ubangi River, the largest right-bank tributary of the Congo River of Central Africa, in Zinga - a village in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the historical Kivu region of the country.

CEMAC region is mainly affected by environmental challenges such as water fluctuation on Congo River triggering navigation and agricultural problems, affecting development of hydropower, and other hydraulic infrastructural challenges. The information contained in this bulletin is mostly directed to help navigators and authorities responsible of navigation on Congo River to plan and regulate the transportation in critical periods of low water level.

CICOS is the Regional Implementation Centre in the CEMAC region under the framework of the African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) programme. There are two types of services that are being implemented and produced through AMESD programme: low-water alert monitoring system on Ubangui River and monitoring the water balance of in Ubangi sub-basin.

Presently, CICOS and its seven national partners are receiving and successfully operating Earth observation data through AMESD station, which has been used by CICOS to derive the information contained in the bulletin.

The production of this bulletin is part of the implementation of the AMESD operational information services that can be available regularly to decision makers and other users of the services at regional and national levels.
