The Mauritius Oceanographic Institute (MOI) and the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) held on 20 and 21 January at the Gold Crest Hotel in Quatre-Bornes (Mauritius) the launching seminar of the THEMA activities for the Indian Ocean region (THEMA-IOC).
The event gathered some fifty participants from the IOC countries (Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles, Reunion), from Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa and Europe. The two days of presentations and discussions were organized around three topics corresponding to the three axes of development of future AMESD services in the Indian Ocean region:
- Space technologies for the management of fisheries resources and fisheries control
- Monitoring of fisheries and fishery resources in the southwest Indian Ocean
- Observational data from the ocean, weather and marine safety at sea
Many examples were presented and followed by discussions and exchanges. The seminar allowed:
- To inform on the project and to present details of planned activities in the south-west Indian Ocean
- To foster meetings and discussions between all managers and scientists involved in monitoring of fish resources, control of fishing fleets, ocean observing, safety at sea. These people have too few opportunities to meet and discuss, while projects are increasingly moving towards a global and integrated management
- To develop recommendations in regards of future activities in the region IOC.
Further to this event, a grant contract should be signed soon between MOI and the Commission of the African Union to start early.
